Getting to Belize
Belize is a country located in Central America, on the eastern coast of the continent, bordered to the north by Mexico, to the west and south by Guatemala, and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. The geographical coordinates for the approximate center of Belize are around 17.1899° N latitude and 88.4976° W longitude. The capital city of Belize is Belmopan, and the largest city is Belize City.
You can get to Belize by land, water, or air. Here’s how:
By Air:
- Belize has an international airport located in Ladyville, just outside Belize City, called Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE). This airport serves as the main entry point for travelers arriving by air.
- Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport receives flights from major cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America, as well as some Caribbean destinations. Airlines such as American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest, WestJet, and Copa Airlines operate regular flights to Belize.
- Once you arrive at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, you can either rent a car, take a taxi, or use shuttle services to reach your final destination within Belize.
By Land:
- Belize shares land borders with Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south. Travelers can enter Belize by land through these border crossings.
- The primary border crossing between Belize and Mexico is at the northern town of Santa Elena/Corozal, known as the Northern Border. From there, travelers can continue on to destinations such as Belize City, San Ignacio, and Placencia.
- The primary border crossing between Belize and Guatemala is at the western town of Benque Viejo del Carmen/San Ignacio, known as the Western Border. From there, travelers can continue on to destinations such as San Ignacio, Tikal (in Guatemala), and Flores (in Guatemala).
By Water:
- Travelers can also reach Belize by water, primarily via cruise ships or private boats.
- Belize City is a popular cruise ship port-of-call, with several cruise lines offering itineraries that include stops in Belize. Cruise passengers can disembark in Belize City and explore nearby attractions or participate in shore excursions.
- Private boats and yachts can also enter Belizean waters through designated ports of entry, such as Belize City or Placencia. Clearance procedures must be followed upon arrival, including customs and immigration requirements.
