I hear many visitors worrying about sandflies and mosquitoes in Belize. Here are some tips to help you minimize exposure and protect yourself:

1. Use Insect Repellent:

• Apply an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin. Follow the product’s instructions for proper application.

2. Wear Protective Clothing:

• Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Consider clothing treated with permethrin, an insect repellent.

3. Install Screens:

• Make sure windows and doors have screens to keep mosquitoes and sand flies outside. Repair any holes in screens to prevent insects from entering.

4. Use Mosquito Nets:

• If you’re staying in a place where mosquitoes are prevalent, consider sleeping under a bed net treated with insecticide.

5. Avoid Peak Activity Times:

• Mosquitoes and sandflies are most active during dawn and dusk. If possible, limit outdoor activities during these times.

6. Choose Accommodations Wisely:

• Stay in accommodations with screens, air conditioning, or mosquito nets. Some places may also use bed nets treated with insecticide.

7. Natural Repellents:

• Consider using natural repellents like citronella candles, neem oil, or eucalyptus oil. While not as effective as DEET, they may provide some protection.

8. Avoid Fragrances:

• Strong perfumes and scented lotions can attract mosquitoes. Consider using unscented hygiene products.

9. Stay Informed about Disease Risks:

• Be aware of any mosquito-borne diseases prevalent in the region you’re visiting. Take necessary precautions and, if needed, consult with a healthcare professional regarding vaccinations or medications.

10. Vehicle Protection:

• When traveling by car, keep windows up and use air conditioning, if available. Consider using car window screens or insect-repellent devices designed for vehicles.

11. After-Bite Treatment:

• If you get bitten, use over-the-counter anti-itch creams or ointments to alleviate discomfort. Avoid scratching to prevent infection.

12. If you have bites, you can purchase Bendryl in individual packs at most stores. Take 2 before you go to bed it will help the healing process

Remember that preventing mosquito and sandfly bites not only provides immediate relief but also helps reduce the risk of diseases.
