Getting Married in Belize

Getting married in Belize involves several steps and requirements.Â

Here’s a general guide:

  1. Residency Requirements:

    • There are no residency requirements to get married in Belize, making it a popular destination for destination weddings.
  2. Documents Needed:

    • Valid passports for both parties.
    • Birth certificates for both parties.
    • If applicable, divorce decrees or death certificates from previous marriages.
    • Parental consent if either party is under 18 years old.
  3. Application Process:

    • Both parties must be present to apply for a marriage license at the Vital Statistics Unit in Belize City or at any of the district offices.
  4. Marriage License Fee:

    • There is a fee associated with obtaining a marriage license. As of my last update in January 2022, the fee is around BZD 100. However, fees are subject to change, so it’s crucial to check with the relevant authorities for the latest information.
  5. Waiting Period:

    • There is no waiting period in Belize, and you can typically obtain a marriage license the same day you apply.
  6. Ceremony:

    • The marriage ceremony can be conducted by a licensed marriage officer, such as a minister of religion, a justice of the peace, or a registered marriage officer.
  7. Witnesses:

    • Two witnesses are required to be present at the ceremony. Witnesses must provide their names and addresses.
  8. Legalization of Marriage Certificate:

    • After the ceremony, you will receive a marriage certificate. If you plan to use this certificate in your home country, you may need to have it legalized. Check with your country’s embassy or consulate in Belize for specific requirements.

It’s advisable to contact the Belize Vital Statistics Unit.  Always plan ahead and allow sufficient time to complete the necessary paperwork and arrangements for your wedding in Belize.
