Getting to your destination in Belize from the International Airport
One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is regarding transportation from Belize Philip Goldson International Airport to various destinations. Here’s a breakdown to help you plan your journey:
1. Traveling to the Keys (San Pedro or Caye Caulker):
- You have two main options: flying with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air.
- Flight costs range from $50 to $200 per person and offer a direct transfer from the airport to your destination in just 10 to 15 minutes.
- Alternatively, you can opt for a taxi from the airport to the water taxi stand. This typically costs around $40 to $60 for a group, depending on the number of passengers.
- From the water taxi stand, you can catch a boat to Caye Caulker first, then to San Pedro.
- The trip to Caye Caulker takes about 15 minutes, while San Pedro is approximately an hour and 15 minutes away.
- Water taxi fares range from $30 to $35 per person each way.
2. Heading to Cayo (e.g., San Ignacio in the jungle):
- You’ll need to arrange for a taxi or drive, as there are no direct flights.
- Taxi fares start at around $200, considering the distance and fuel costs (around $13 per gallon). The journey typically takes a minimum of 2 hours.
3. Traveling to Southern Belize (Hopkins or Placencia):
- For Hopkins, you can fly from Belize International Airport to Dangriga, then take a taxi to your hotel or destination in Hopkins. Taxi fares range from $40 to $75. Some hotels offer shuttle services, so it’s worth inquiring about.
- For Placencia, you can fly directly from Philip Goldson International Airport to Placencia. Most hotels offer airport shuttles since the airport is conveniently located in the village.
It’s important to note that Belize is geographically diverse, and travel times can vary significantly. For instance, traveling to Placencia or Hopkins can take 2.5 to 3.5 hours due to the country’s large landmass. Similarly, reaching Cayo requires a journey of approximately two hours. Even though San Pedro may seem close, being an island, it necessitates either a boat or flight transfer. Considering these details during your travel planning can help you anticipate and avoid unexpected expenses.
