How to get around Belize

Getting around Belize is relatively easy, and you have several transportation options to explore the country:

  1. Domestic Flights: Domestic flights are available between major destinations in Belize, such as Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia, and other regional airports. Maya Island Air and Tropic Air are the two main airlines providing domestic flights.
  2. Taxis: Taxis are a common mode of transportation in urban areas like Belize City and popular tourist destinations. Make sure to negotiate the fare before getting in the taxi, as they generally do not use meters.
  3. Water Taxis: Water taxis operate between Belize City and popular islands like Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. They offer a scenic and efficient way to travel along the coast.
  4. Rental Cars: Renting a car is a good option if you want more freedom and flexibility to explore Belize. Several international car rental agencies operate in the country, and major highways connect many destinations. Note that driving is on the right side of the road in Belize.
  5. Public Buses: Public buses are an affordable option for getting around Belize. The buses connect major towns and cities, and they can be a good way to experience local life. However, they may not always adhere to strict schedules, so be prepared for potential delays.
  6. Water Taxis and Boats: In coastal areas and islands, water taxis and boats are commonly used for short trips, island hopping, or visiting marine reserves.
  7. Bicycle and Golf Cart Rentals: In smaller towns and islands, bicycles and golf carts are popular modes of transportation. They provide a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around and explore at a leisurely pace.

It’s important to plan your transportation ahead of time, especially for longer journeys or during peak travel seasons. Consider the specific requirements of your destination and check for any updated travel information or advisories.
