Museum of Belize

The Museum of Belize is one of the best places in Belize City to discover the country’s fascinating history, culture and heritage. Located on Gabourel Lane in a beautifully restored historic building, the museum offers visitors an opportunity to travel through Belize’s past, from the ancient Maya civilization to the colonial period and modern-day Belize.

The building itself has an interesting history. Originally constructed in the 19th century, it was once used as a prison during the British colonial period. After extensive restoration, it was transformed into the Museum of Belize and opened to the public in 2002.

Inside, visitors can explore exhibitions covering thousands of years of Belizean history. The Maya galleries feature pottery, artifacts and other objects that provide insight into the sophisticated civilization that flourished throughout the region. Other exhibits explore the period of British settlement, the logging industry, slavery, colonial life and Belize’s journey toward independence.

The museum also highlights Belize’s rich cultural diversity. Visitors can learn about the traditions and contributions of the country’s Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo, Creole and other communities. Exhibits help explain how these different cultures have shaped Belizean identity.

For travelers visiting Belize City, the Museum of Belize is an excellent stop for gaining a deeper understanding of the country beyond its beautiful beaches and tropical landscapes. It is particularly worthwhile for first-time visitors because it places many of Belize’s people, traditions and historic sites into context.

A visit to the museum is a chance to see the stories, artifacts and cultures that have helped make Belize the unique country it is today.
