Are you visiting Placencia?
If so, here’s some helpful information to make your trip as smooth as possible. We’re sharing this because many travelers don’t realize that Placencia is a peninsula—and that can lead to confusion when booking accommodations or planning activities.
Understanding the Placencia Peninsula
The Placencia Peninsula is made up of four main villages, each with its own unique character. Here’s a quick breakdown as you drive south from the mainland:
1. Riversdale
This is the first village you’ll come across once you turn off the main highway at the junction. Riversdale is a quiet fishing village with minimal amenities—just a small hotel and a local community. Not much for tourists, but peaceful and authentic.
2. Maya Beach
Further down the peninsula, you’ll reach Maya Beach. This charming village is known for its beachfront restaurants, boutique hotels, and a wide variety of Airbnb options. It’s laid-back and a great place to relax, but keep in mind it’s about a 20–25 minute drive from the actual village of Placencia.
3. Seine Bight
Next up is Seine Bight, a vibrant and culturally rich Garifuna village. You’ll recognize it by the colorful yellow, black, and white buildings. It’s always buzzing with activity—especially on holidays and weekends. Drive slowly here, as the village is full of local life. You’ll also find one of the largest grocery stores in the area, Publics, which offers great local pricing.
4. Placencia Village
At the very tip of the peninsula lies Placencia Village itself. This is the heart of the action—filled with shops, cafés, restaurants, high-end hotels, and plenty of tourist attractions. If you’re looking for walkable access to nightlife, dining, and excursions, this is where you’ll want to stay if you want to be able to walk
A Common Mistake to Avoid
Many visitors book a stay in Maya Beach or Seine Bight thinking they’re right next to Placencia Village. While these areas are lovely, they are not walking distance from the village center. You’ll need to drive (or take a taxi), and the trip can take 20–30 minutes each way, costing $5–$10 USD one way.
