Dangriga, often known as the cultural capital of Belize, is a vibrant coastal town located in the Stann Creek District in southern Belize. Originally called Stann Creek Town after the nearby river, the town was officially renamed Dangriga in 1975, a Garifuna word often interpreted as “sweet water.” Today, it remains the heart of Garifuna culture in Belize, where traditions have been carefully preserved and passed down through generations.
This cultural richness comes to life most vividly during Garifuna Settlement Day, celebrated every November 19. The town bursts into celebration with traditional drumming, dancing, reenactments, and ceremonies that honor the arrival of the Garifuna people. Music is central to this identity, with genres like punta and paranda originating here—rhythms that tell stories, express emotion, and connect the past with the present.
