How to Become a Resident
Belize is currently introducing a proposed Investor Residence Program that could create a new pathway for qualifying investors toward permanent residence. Under the proposal outlined by Belize’s Immigration Minister on October 2, 2026, eligible investors would need to make a minimum investment of BZ$500,000, with permanent residence potentially available after 2½ years, provided the applicant has spent a cumulative one year in Belize during that period. The proposal is intended for qualified investors who establish businesses and contribute to Belize’s economy, but it should be described as proposed legislation/programming rather than current law until formally enacted.
For comparison, Belize’s current permanent-residence rules generally require at least one year of legal residence and no more than 14 days outside Belize during that qualifying year.
